i think it would be cool if we did a live draft in an aim chat room. I hate the message board drafts that drag on for weeks. if we could get all or most of it done in an hour one night it would be really helpful.
i was thinking like at 12 am est. everybody good with that? i will need to make a date once the playoffs are over.
in order to have a live draft you would need to make rankings of all the players in order to have a smooth draft.
is that good???

I think it's a great idea.
I'm not too sure about midnight though. Why not some Sunday afternoon or something? I think it would and in fact SHOULD take longer than an hour because there should be ample time between picks (maybe 3-5 minutes "on the clock" in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd rounds and 1-2 minutes in the later rounds) in cases where guys have to make adjustments based on who's left on the board and also to allow the possibility for guys to trade up or down during the draft.

I agree midnight would be bad for me unless it was like on a Saturday night. However a sunday afternoon/evening would work wonderfully.

Good idea.
Not to fond of midnight though.
Disasta, not everyone has it 9 at midnight EST.
I could do it 10-11EST, but not 12-1

I think it is a good idea in theory. However, I find it difficult to believe that 16 people, in 4 different time zones, could all meet and efficiently do a live draft. Maybe it's just the pessimist in me, but good luck.

IMO, it would definitely be much better to have a live AIM draft than a message board draft.
I could do 12 AM EST if it were a Saturday night, but that would not be my preference. I would prefer earlier Saturday afternoon or night or Sunday afternoon. I have a class Sunday evenings and am not available after 6:00 PM EST on Sundays. Obviously the greatest barrier to a live draft will be finding a time to get all 16 people together, but I say we try.
A little math... 9 rounds X 16 teams = 144 picks 1 hour = 60 minutes = 3600 seconds 3600/144 = 25 seconds per pick to get it done in one hour This seems quick... I think it would take more like 2 hours. Still much better than the weeks that a message board draft will take.
In order to keep things rolling, I think we would need some ground rules. Some suggestions:
1) Limit "on the clock" times to 2 minutes per pick. Many picks will probably take less than 30 seconds if everyone has done their homework and pre-ranked the players.
2) Have 2 AIM chat rooms - a PICK room and a TALK room. The PICK room would be limited to draft picks and official draft business from the draft commissioner (who has next pick, etc). The TALK room would be for everything else: commentary, BS, etc. I am assuming that trade negotiations would go on in private AIM discussions. I think this would keep the real draft business much more organized and on track.
3) Allow teams to trade draft picks, but require that they are announced in the PICK chat room at the time of the first pick involved in the trade. For example, if John traded a 3rd round pick to Paul for an 8th and 9th round pick, then the details of the trade would be announced in the PICK chat room by John at the time of his 3rd round selection. Paul would then announce his pick in the PICK chat room. Again, this would keep the draft organized and team owners aware of all trades.
That's all I can immediately think of. Interested to hear comments...

Maybe it's just the pessimist in me, but good luck. Thats why you set the draft time up way ahead of time. Like now for 3 weeks later. Then, if they cant make it, they give a list. And if they STILL forget, they dont disserve to get who they wnat.

While I think a live draft would be a great idea in theory I think it's just too tough to get 16 people who don't know each other and have all kinds of different work schedules together at the same time. For instance, I have a job where I work 6 days in a row and have 3 days off so I'm not always off on a weekend. I work 7-3 (that's 7 am to 3 pm central time) for 3 days and 10-6 for the other 3 days. I'm not able to do any sort of drafting from work so I would be out if it was in the day. Having said that if you think you want to go with a live draft I would be willing to give you my work schedule. I really don't want to be in the league if I don't draft my own team because I really don't want want to have to rank 144 positions in order before a draft. I'm really looking forward to my first league season of Tecmo though so I hope this all works out. Later

Marshall you'd only have to rank 9 postions. We draft by say you want Bo Jackson, well you get all the Raiders RB's. Same with QB's, WR's, TE's, OL, DE, LB's, CB/SS, k/p. Also in the first draft quite a few people used a list to pick from and it went fairly easy. If someone's choice was gone they'd either move to the next item on the list for you or chose the best possible replacement. I know I went 2-8 but it wasn't because of the players I had:) Strictly boneheaded plays by me. Anyway can't wait for season 2!!

Drafting from a pre-ranked list is no where near the same as being there. Many of my picks are based on runs at certain positions or good value for a player who falls. My rankings are a guide for me when drafting, but I never follow them exactly. I will definitely try to be there for a live draft, but it's not like I can call off for tecmo bowl draft. I would just like to have input on my picks, not just select from a list.

I'm sure we will all get to have strong input on our teams:) Disasta did an excellent job first time around. And even if all we could get done live were say 2 or 3 rounds it would speed up the process tremendously:)

Thanks Paulie, you said what I was trying to say but couldn't quite explain it very well. I didn't mean to say 144 positions, I meant 144 picks (16 x 9) and your part about the runs at certain positions and all that is why I don't like handing someone a list and saying "pick whoever's next on my list". If it is decided to go with a live draft (which I would prefer but like I said it's tough logistically to pull off) I'll do everything I can to be there otherwise I'll have to wait for another season.
